About Günter

I have had the dream of becoming a woodspirit carver since I was a boy growing up in Germany. There are many carvers throughout Europe. Now that I'm retired, I decided to give it a try and have now been carving for two years.

I was fortunate to be introduced to Ray Downey whose carvings I admired at a local Craft Fair. He gave me a lesson and helped me to purchase the tools that I would need. He also has brought me many pine knots suitable for carving from his home in Fernie and from Arizona.

My inspiration was further fostered after reading a book called "How to Carve a Woodfellow" by Mel McDaniel. In it he describes how to create a woodfellow from the raw knot to the finished product.

I do hand carving mostly in cottonwood bark and power tool carving of the tougher knots of several kinds of trees. Occasionally, I carve larger pieces on commission.

I find my material where I reside in picturesque Halfmoon Bay, B.C., Canada. It is washed up along our beautiful beaches and lying in the coniferous forest also on the mountain plateaus where it has been sun-bleached. Each piece of wood has a hidden spirit which waits to be released.
